Just curious what would happen if I wrote “return to sender” on junk mail and sent it back?

Posted In: Other - Business & Finance by admin

Random thought: what if we took all our junk mail, wrote “return to sender” on the envelope, and then sent it back to whoever sent it….of course they would have to eat the postage back…but maybe it’ll discourage junk mailing.

  • Does anyone cut-up credit card offers and mail them back to the sender?
  • What is the proper way to return mail to sender?
  • Is it appropriate to “Return To Sender” junk mail?
  • I received an email in my bulk folder with a link to a you tube video, but the video would not open?
  • How do you stop **** from entering your regular e-mail. I block the sender and it comes back in another name?
Up?

Hahahahaha! I love it!!! I think it’s an absolute waste for so dang much junk mail coming in the mailbox! I’m going to do that!

chirochrisf 28/11/10 @ 8:45 pm

Now, if we could only do that with spam!

mmoonnii 29/11/10 @ 3:28 pm

A very good question. As I don’t have the answer, please let me know when you find out.

Check with your bank.. I found out that at least 80% of the mail is being generated by mine, they apparently pass your name and address to other companies. I called my bank about it and the customer service rep sent me to a site where I checked 2 boxes one said no more phone calls, the other no more mailings. That not only cut my advertisements down but stopped most solicitors. I get very little unwanted mail now it was amazing! (the few I get I use to start my fireplace fires ;-) )) I have sent back some and depending on the organization some stop sending others don’t get the hint.

what is better is if they have a s.a.s.e inside. Take that and put their envelope and the contents back into it. Then send it back. They do not have to pay postage on mail that is undeliverable. The s.a.s.e. is the surest way to make sure they pay double postage.

Only first class mail is returned. It would provide extra work for the postal carrier, who would have to find a trash can for the mail.

tammy lou 03/12/10 @ 10:28 pm

here is a little mail fact. look up frank in the dictionary. one of the definitions is to mark a piece of mail “frank” where we know a stamp should be and legally they have to mail it for free. check it out. and on the junk mail. try not to sign up for stupid things online or anywhere for that matter. you ever wonder were places like myspace and youtube make there money. selling your information from the highest to the lowest bitter.

kewtber 04/12/10 @ 8:28 am

much of it would go back to the sender provided you don’t open it. clearly mark, refused, return to sender. it probably won’t stop the tide of junk mail to do that check out:

anthony 07/12/10 @ 8:43 am

Yeah, uh i’ve seen people do that.
Nothing happens its just funny.

Now if you could only find a way to add coins tio the package and make the spam people pay for postage somehow..

dragonrider707 10/12/10 @ 8:25 am

If there is a return envelope with postage I always send them something in return….usually someone elses junk mail so I can spread it around. I sometimes wonder what they think when they open it….but not much.

msshaden 10/12/10 @ 10:05 pm

They will send it back to you. I’ve done it several times and funny, the people/company that mailed it to you doesn’t want it either. Go figure.

Eliel S 14/12/10 @ 7:23 am

Hahaha!
I would just love to do that!
Good riddance to junk mail, I would say!

mhosk1@sbcglobal.net 16/12/10 @ 12:24 pm

it would get thrown out by your postal carrier. only 1st class would be treated to the return trip

Jess 19/12/10 @ 10:33 am

As a temporary hired by Visa to open envelopes, I can assure you when people return junk mail, either refused or with torn paper inside, the envelope is simply dropped in the trashbag and forgotten. Thus your mailings won’t stop. The easiest way to stop junk mail is to put yourself on a list asking for none to be delivered.

Mike G 21/12/10 @ 4:23 pm

Absolutely nothing would happen. You have a higher opinion of yourself than anyone else around you.

Answeringu 22/12/10 @ 4:44 am

Don’t do this if your aim is to get back at junk mailers. Instead, go ahead and open it up. Look for the envelope to send back. Just return their information back to them with their own return envelope. Now they are paying twice. This may get the point to the junk mailers to stop. But I somewhat doubt it.

Angelus 25/12/10 @ 12:08 am

Only government people can mark their mail Frank and get it mailed for me

rmyorktx 26/12/10 @ 10:11 pm

If it were sent to you 1st class, it would be returned, just like any 1st class item. Otherwise, it is destroyed. Unlikely, however, that a junk mailer will send things 1st class.

tntemt 27/12/10 @ 5:57 am

hahaha, I love the idea.

odonatagroves 27/12/10 @ 10:02 pm

What I find fun to do is, take the insides from each junk mail, switch them with each others’ pre-paid envelope and mail them back. This way Chase MasterCard gets the adds for Citibank etc.. When I was younger we used to put **** in the prepaid envelopes and send them back but I am much more mature than that now. (you can still do it though).

gobblygoo 29/12/10 @ 6:46 pm

the peeps that send the junk mail would probably send it too you again thinking that they sent it to the wrong person

Benjamin C 30/12/10 @ 6:34 pm

from what I understand you can take the sase that accompany’s the junk mail and use it on a box to send back to sender,up to 75 lbs so get rid of some of the old tires and what have you,put it in a box tape the return envelope to the box and bring it to your mail center.they will deliver your junk to the sender ,you get rid of your junk and the postal service collects for delivery everyone wins except the original sender. It works I’ve done it.

bzzzzzed 31/12/10 @ 7:39 pm

very interesting indeed! I’ve read the replies and some are pretty funny and informative. I’d like to suggest something for SPAM that’s out there fishing for your private info. I say we all reply to it, with the info of your local police / commerce dept. stations as address/contact info- It may just raise enough eyebrows to make it less profitable for them… or nothing might happen. Just a thought. Peace.

annette y 03/01/11 @ 12:25 pm

Its called 3rd class mail and it would go into a 3rd class mail bin at your local main post office and be thrown away.

freshbliss 04/01/11 @ 9:30 am

Wouldnt work, but boy, is that Brilliant!!!!

Rachael 07/01/11 @ 9:07 pm

OK so if you really want to take the time to get the stupid junk mail people back this is the best way to do it…

Go to this website and follow the directions, it is too funny!

LEGAL REVENGE AGAINST SPAM SNAIL-MAILERS

Hulabaloola 09/01/11 @ 12:20 am

well, if it was a directed piece of mail, they would know that your address and your person is “active”, just as spammers would realise your email account is active.

but i think it would be funny. do try it and let me know.

lawmom 11/01/11 @ 12:01 pm

I’ve noticed lately that alot of junk mail doesn’t even have a return address anymore. Plus, if it’s bulk mail, it’ll get trashed. I’m very much in favor of using thier s.a.s.e. to send back as much junk as possible. It doesn’t even matter to me if they don’t get the point, at least I’m helping to support the post office and doing my part to keep postage rates low. And, I conserve on garbage bags. Let them toss it.

curlyandcute 13/01/11 @ 11:51 am

that is very funny my mom used to joke about it!hahahahahahahaahahaha

spanishorses4me 14/01/11 @ 10:21 am

nothing happens sometimes its returned as a defalt add.or it goes threw.I always send back the lottos saying I won big bucks & I say I reported them as a scam.

jimbob9116 warren 16/01/11 @ 12:06 am

IT would Bounce!!!!! They wont except YOUR email.. So Dont excepththeirs. Delete it!!

exo 16/01/11 @ 5:59 pm

You will be waisting your time by returning it. Just put it on the junk. That’ why it is called junk mail.
